  • why is it you ask people and not read the bible yourself ? You don't have nothing to lose but some time wasted and you would know the way we are to act and think..If your mind is already made up and noone can change it then you would have nothing to worry about,if you read the bible..I just thought of that and wondering why you don't read it yourself..

  • Actually, I've read five translations of the bible, taken twenty college level courses of bible study, from three different points of view (Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, Methodist).

    So I have read it... which is what convinced me that it was bogus.

  • That's exactly what my husband and I did. We set out to prove the bible wrong so we could justify our lives. Only in the end we were the ones proved wrong. It's amazing what happens when you look into it yourself instead of relying on someone elses belief

  • most of the one who have read it only did so to try and pick it apart. When they don't understand it they blame the book. Bible scholar Jim_darwin asked a question the other day about the Gospel of Peter. Since ther is no Gospel of peter that tells you how serious he was about trying to get something real out of it. The rest of these guys are all the same. They will never gain a real understanding of scripture without the Holy Spirit to guide them. They might get it memorized though.

  • I think you have a preconceived idea, an erroneous one.

    I read the bible from cover to cover twice. I read it cover to cover for the first time when I was still a believer, that was the start of the process that lead me to atheism. The more I read it, the more ridiculous I find it. The more they explain me "the interpretations", the more I think some religious people are gullible, formal apologetics is always a good way to exercise my skills in identifying fallacies.

    Asking people about particular matters in the bible is a good way to start discussions, just in case you haven't figured out that.

    As far as I'm concerned, most atheists are familiar with the particular "holy" or "sacred" book of the society where they live in.

    Oddly enough, all my atheistic friends have read the bible (all of them) from cover to cover and some of my christian friends haven't read the bible from cover to cover. I'm not surprised though.

  • I HAVE read the Bible, kiddo. Asking about subjective understandings and interpretations and applications requires a human to be on the receiving end of the question, not a book.
