  • During the tax year of 2005/2006 I had 2 part time jobs whilst being a full time college student and 1 of the jobs i was in i was paying tax which i shouldn't. I was wondering if it is possible to reclaim that money now as i never got round to do it?
Also how do i go by claiming it?
    Thanks

  • Yes, in the UK you can go back until 2002/2003. Contact tax office. They may need documentary evidence of the tax deduction (forms P60 or forms P45), and further information on your employment history for the year.

  • If you don't file for 3 years they screw you for the fourth and no refund is allowed. I would file another return to the Intentional Ripoff Service and try to reclaim some rightfully earned compensation for your time.

  • If you were working while a student, then there is a good chance you can claim all your tax back as you would have earned below your personal allowance.

You can claim back upto 6 years ago.

Your national insurance contributions can not be claimed back, but some can be transferred into a person pension abroad.

    You have 2 options.

    1. Send your P45/P60s/statement of earnings as well as a completed P91, P85 and P86 if applicable to your local tax office with a cover letter.
    2. Alternatively you can use an agency who will do all the work and deal with the Inland Revenue for you but they charge around 10%, one example is:

  • Legally, you can claim back an overpayment for up to 6 years. I suggest that you write a letter to your local tax office. I did so recently, I explained how much I had been taxed in that particular year and how much I should have been taxed. I received a cheque from HMRC within two months.
