  • A number of "Bible Christians" believe if it's not in the Bible, don't believe it. This is known is "sola scriptura." They also believe that people are saved by "faith alone," this is known as, "sola fides."

For this reason, many Christians don't consider some Catholic teachings as valid.

What I'd like to know is if anyone can proof text where either of these teachings are in the Bible? I'm looking for something EXPLICIT, not implied. This after all is the rule of thumb "Bible Christians" demand of Catholics.

  • First of all I am not against the Catholics and I do think some Catholics are saved and I am thrilled to see more people in the Catholic church reading their bible more to know what the word says. And if its not in the bible, the bible has so much information we are to confirm it with the bible to see if it contradicts the word. The Holy Spirit is in line with the Word of God. We should be united in Christ who is head of the church. There will be no denominations in heaven and all nations will be represented. I don't go to the Catholic church because of they call their pastor "Father" and kneel before idols. I dont believe Sacraments are mandatory and I dont think any of the apostles would ever allow themselves to live as kings in a palace sitting on thrones on earth and wearing crowns. The bible doesnt talk about voting people in to be saints as well. So I think the Catholic church is kinda off. Many get offended easily and I hope they will be understanding. Its not about whose church is the real church. This seems to be the Catholic attitude. Its about worshipping in truth and spirit and loving one another putting God above all.

1 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Galatians 3:14 - The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

    Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

John 5:39 - You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me

Deuteronomy 8:3 and Matthew 4:4 - Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"

JOhn 14:23 - Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.

    God bless you.

  • I cannot tell you those verses, but I can tell you of verses that support the Catholic Church as the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ.

Jesus founded the Catholic Church: Matthew 16:18

St. Peter was the first pope: Matthew 16:18

The Church is considered the pillar of truth: 1 Timothy 3:15

The Bible is the inspired word of God: 2 Timothy 3:16

Church Tradition is authoritative like the Bible: 2 Thessalonians 2:15

  • Sola Scriptura is a heresy from Satan. We can see that by the tens of thousands of denominations that have resulted from this teaching. The Bible says we will know them by their fruits and the fruit of Sola Scriptura is division within the Body of Christ.

The only place tht "faith alone" is mentioned in Scriptures is in the book of James where it is condemned as a heresy.

Certainly the Bible is suitable for teaching and inspired as the Church has said but remember St. Paul taught that the Bible is only part of the truth. The other part is the oral teaching of Jesus and the apostles through apostolic succession in the Church . One should read the entire Bible and understand it in context instead of using eisegesis and coming to false conclusions. this is why the Bible should be interpreted through the authority given by Christ, His Church.

  • Galatians

  • john three sixteen...god sent his only son to save the world and for those who believe in him shall have eternal life...not verbatim. jesus gave one commandment...to treat your neighbors as you would like to be treated.

for one, i would not stand against a persons belief in salvation and support their ideologies as it has given them spiritual manna and comfort. acknowldgeing christ is a great blessing no matter the religion. i have read of many saints and their lives where each devoted soul created they own gospel of how jesus lived through them. the only concern i have is for those who have denied him...its highly offensive considering his last days on earth were spent being tortured and mocked by the same people who praised his arrival...the govenment, the religious institution, and the mob crucified jesus...whatever your belief never forget what happened and by whom.

  • The righteous shall live by faith (Habakuk)

Honestly, Luther pointed these out centuries ago.

  • Alright I'll play. Sola Scriptura relates to the idea that only scripture itself is God-breathed and useful for making a man complete for every good work. (2nd Timothy 3:16-17). This would say that there is no longer any need for any additional instruction on how to be a Christian outside of Scripture. Factor in some of the teachings of the Popes and how they have been abandoned for being wrong and you can see the skepticism for accepting anything other than Scripture as authoritative. This is not to say that some Popes have not done good things for the understanding of God, but if it is not based on Scripture it does not have the same authority.

As for Sola Fide. This refers to the idea that it is faith alone that saves a person because we are not good enough to work our own salvation. This does not negate the idea of works but removes the emphasis from doing good works to earn salvation to doing good works because it is God working through us to accomplish his goals. (Philippians 2:12-13) Works are a proof of salvation not the means to salvation, in other words, works are the effects of faith and if you do not have works that flow from salvation it becomes more apparent that you are not actually saved. ( repeated theme in James)

If you want more explanation or have other questions let me know.

  • There is something in faith but "Don't believe if it is not in the bible" is not a decent slogan. Nowadays many people roaming in the streets insisting common people to read bible and christian magazines like political party members who roam for votes. These people seems working for money. What sincerity other people can expect from these professionals? They don't seem as if worrying for the people but worrying for themselves for the fear of losing job. Spreading a religion must not be a motive but spreading good and moral points among people must be the motive. Intellectuals never see what religion is it? They always see what points they say and what good they can do for the human community.

  • (John 17:17) 17 Sanctify them by means of the truth; your word is truth.

(2 Timothy 3:16-17) 16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

(Matthew 4:4) . . . It is written, Man must live, not on bread alone, but on every utterance coming forth through Jehovah s mouth. . .

(James 2:14-17) 14 Of what benefit is it, my brothers, if a certain one says he has faith but he does not have works? That faith cannot save him, can it? 15 If a brother or a sister is in a naked state and lacking the food sufficient for the day, 16 yet a certain one of YOU says to them: Go in peace, keep warm and well fed, but YOU do not give them the necessities for [their] body, of what benefit is it? 17 Thus, too, faith, if it does not have works, is dead in itself.

(James 2:18-23) 18 Nevertheless, a certain one will say: You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith apart from the works, and I shall show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe there is one God, do you? You are doing quite well. And yet the demons believe and shudder. 20 But do you care to know, O empty man, that faith apart from works is inactive? 21 Was not Abraham our father declared righteous by works after he had offered up Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 You behold that [his] faith worked along with his works and by [his] works [his] faith was perfected, 23 and the scripture was fulfilled which says: Abraham put faith in Jehovah, and it was counted to him as righteousness, and he came to be called Jehovah s friend.

Truth is based in the Bible. Faith alone gets you no where.
